Home, it is the foundation that everything is built from. It is our safe space to relax, decompress, plan, dream, build success and happiness. We usually spend so much time and thought in how to prepare ourselves for the new year – but in all honesty, is it really going to work if we are shackled to an atmosphere that is most likely holding us back. Making the time to prepare your space for the new year can help you feel calm, organized, and ready for what’s ahead. Whether you love a full reset or just a few small changes, I thought I would share my practical guide that fits all budgets and needs to get your home New Year ready!
The best plan is to stand in each room and take notes on the following questions: How does the room make you feel? Does the furniture need to be moved around, would a different color paint make you feel better, does it need to be declutterred, what needs to be deep cleaned and washed, is there anything in the room you really don’t want or don’t need, what would need to happen in this room to make you feel better and enjoy it more? In your pantry and laundry room, think of how it could be set up to be more efficient during your everyday needs and use.
When you arrive in your bedroom, bathroom, closet: Follow the same questions above; however, focus on what needs to happen for you to feel relaxed, for your mind to feel free, for you to be able to focus on you and your mental well being. In your closet, if you have not worn it in the last year…are you really ever going to wear it?
Once you have your lists for each room, schedule days for each task to be completed, depending on the size of your home, this could take several days to complete. Each day try to begin early and move through each task one at a time, completing each as you move forward.
1. Begin with a purge and declutter
- Do I use this?
- Do I need this?
- Does this add value to my life?
2. Deep clean
- Baseboards, floors, corners, crown molding, walls
- Windows, window sills and mirrors
- Under furniture, inside furniture
- Kitchen appliances, cabinet interior and exterior
- A/C returns, A/C vents
- Drapes, blinds, bookshelves, cabinets
3. Refresh your space
Now that your space has been declutterred and deep cleaned, this is a great opportunity to decide on a budget friendly refresh which can range from new rugs, fresh paint, new decor to these budget friendly options:
- Rearrange furniture within the room or move furniture around between rooms
- Add a plant or two
- Change lighting either creating warmer or brighter lighting
- Move pillows and throw blankets
- Move window coverings from one room to another
4. Organize for everyday living
Great organization saves time and reduces stress throughout the year. Once the clutter is gone, and everything has been deep cleaned and a budget friendly refresh has been completed… organize what remains. Use baskets, drawers, labels, or storage boxes to give everything a proper place. Pay special attention to:
- Entryways (for shoes, bags, keys)
- Closets – including bathroom, hall, linen, storage, etc.
- Desks and study/work areas
- Laundry room
- Pantry
- Coffee tables, kitchen tables, bar tops
5. Maintenance
Maintaining a regular home maintenance schedule helps to prevent larger and more costly issues in the long run. The New Year is a great time to make sure everything is working properly to maintain safety and efficiency:
- Test smoke detectors
- Change air filters
- Clean out dryer vent and bottom area of dryer
- Clean washing machine
- Deep clean vacuums and clean or replace filters
- Clean exhaust fan and filter over the cooktop
- Clean fridge and replace filters
- Clean dishwasher (you might want to watch a YouTube video on how to take apart the bottom of your dishwasher and clean the filter or hire someone to do it)
- Check door and window locks
- Replace worn-out bulbs
- Fix small repairs you’ve been putting off
6. Create a space that will support your personal growth and goals
What are your personal and professional goals for the new year? Take a moment to think of what you want to accomplish and what kind of space you can create that will support you. With a supportive area, you are more likely to stick to your plans.
- Establish a quiet study or work corner
- Make your bedroom or bathroom more relaxing
- Create a small area for hobbies or reading
- Designate a work out or mediation area
7. Release the Old Year
Your home should support who you are becoming, not who you used to be. Remove items tied to stress or negative memories and keep what reminds you of growth and happiness. Preparing your home for the Ne Year does not have to be overwhelming or budget consuming. You can successfully create a space that feels welcoming, clean, and motivating that will support you and your new possibilities!
Cheers to you and your and a New Year and a refreshed home that supports your best life.
